Foods – Wild Fruit and Vegetables

Some Florida Indian scholars claim that because not much evidence for agriculture in archaeological sites has been found, the Tocobaga and Calusa Indians pretty much subsisted on seafood and deer. We beg to differ. Florida has a cornucopia of readily available fruit and vegetables available to harvest and, in some cases, to cultivate. Being that these native people were intimately familiar with their environs, they understood the seasonality of fresh fruit and vegetables.  For interesting insights into the foods pictured here and many others, visit Eat the Weeds by Green Deane or view his videos on youtube.
